SOUTHERN TIER INDEPENDENCE CENTER (STIC)
Southern Tier Independence Center has been in existence for 30 years as a Not for Profit Agency. The sign language The Deaf Services Program supports this mission by providing services that empower Deaf people to live independent and productive lives, with full access to the rights, privileges, and opportunities available to the general public.
The Deaf Services Program accomplishes this goal by providing the following services: ASL, Signed English, Oral, and Tactile Interpretation. Assignment sites include but are not limited to: all educational interpreting from preschool to graduate level classes, hospital & medical appointments, technical training, employment needs, seminars, artistic performances, courtrooms, etc. Currently, we have several contracts for services and are always open to new ones.
STIC Interpreter Services acts as an advocate for the provision of services in accordance with the ADA regulations.
STIC maintains a pool of approximately 50 interpreters in private practice that are independent contractors and accept assignments through our agency. The interpreters are not employees of STIC. These interpreters live in various locations throughout New York and Pennsylvania. We reguarly provide services for the following areas: Broome County, Cortland County, Delaware County, Tigoa County, Tompkins County & Bradford County. We also occasionally provide services in Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, and various parts of Pennsylvania. Interpreters are matched to assignments based on their their strengths, appropriateness to the job, and the location.
Policies & Procedures
We accept requests for Interpreters by phone, fax, mail or e-mail. The more notice we have the better chance of us being able to get the most skilled Interpreter within the area. In general we suggest that you give us at least 2 weeks notice for appointments when possible. We understand however that this is not always possible and usually can provide an interpreter with less notice but we can not promise that due to interpreter availability. STIC does require 24 hours notice of cancellation during regular business hours to avoid being charged for the interpreter’s time. In the event the Deaf consumer does not appear as scheduled; the interpreter will wait for 20 minutes before leaving the assignment.
