Ride-Sharing Services

Services like Uber and Lyft are available to use and are typically cheaper than cabs.

You can access Uber either online or via their mobile app (offered in both the App Store and Google Play). Riders are told the fare that they will pay before requesting the ride. Prices vary based on projected time and distance, as well as the time of day, and the supply and demand for rides at the time the ride is requested. At the end of the ride, payment is made based on the rider’s pre-selected preferences, which could be a credit card on file, Google Wallet, Apple Pay, or cash.  After the ride is over, in the United States, the rider is given the option to provide a gratuity (tip) to the driver, which is also billed to the rider’s payment method.

Lyft is available in Binghamton.  It works similarly to Uber, except riders must download the Lyft mobile app to their smart phone, sign up, enter a valid phone number, and enter a valid form of payment (either a credit card, or link to an Apple Pay, Google Wallet, or PayPal account). Passengers can then request a ride from a nearby driver. Once confirmed, the app shows the driver’s name, ratings by past passengers, and photos of the driver and car. Drivers and passengers can add personal information to their profiles about their hometown, music preferences, and other details to encourage drivers and passengers to converse during the ride. After the ride is over, the rider is given the opportunity to provide a gratuity (tip) to the driver, which is also billed to the rider’s payment method.
